Eastern Region is one of the friendliest and excessively polite people in the southern part of Ghana. The region is full of the nation's history. Introducing one of the relatively unknown waterfalls in the country- Akaa Falls.
In one of the 21 districts in Yilo Krobo, specifically Akyeremateng village is where nature’s beautiful Akaa falls can be found. Despite it’s close proximity to Boti falls, it is rather surprising that this falls remained hidden and underdeveloped for such a long time which definitely needs a face lift.
A 2hour drive from Accra the nation’s capital and a 5 minute walk from the main road along a marked trail. Akaa Falls is accessed via a scenic 250 concrete stairs to the bottom with a canyon of falling water around if the flow is good, a snake like palm tree and a designed gigantic rocks with an ancient hunter’s foot print. It is quite an incredible experience especially for individuals who cherish beautiful vegetation, cool weather and waterfalls in general.
Historically , the name Akaa was originated by the folks in the Akyeremateng village. Many years ago, one of the colonial masters who settled in the village went strolling around the mouth of the river, decided to take a scoop but unfortunately fell into it. On the search for him for days, an old woman found him stuck in between the river and the mountain when she visited one morning. She then screamed telling the neighbors in twi ( one of Ghana’s dominant local dialect) that he’s stuck he’s stuck ( w’aka w’aka ...so from w’akaa then the name Akaa falls was generated.
Akaa falls has an amazing waterbody on a cliff and apart from the fact that it’s undiscovered by the bigger population, it presents a unique opportunity for peaceful solitude and a serene getaway from the hustle and bustle of city life.
To properly view this untapped beauty, the trip must be planned after the rainy season where the falls is said to be vibrant and at its climax. Remember to take along your camera , food and some bottles of drinks for an enjoyable trip.
