THE BIG TREE(Nathalie Afful Dcs 20794)

The South District of the Eastern Region holds some of the most beautiful and natural treasures and we present one of the greatest. Known as “The Big Tree”, is considered as the biggest tree in West Africa made of the Bako species and its botanical name is tieghemela heckle.
It is located in one of the District’s nine forest reserves called the Esen Apam Forest Reserves of Akim Oda in the Eastern Region of Ghana. It’s about 22kilometers from Akim Oda on the Oda-Agona Swedru trunk road. According to the Ghana Forestry officials, the tree has a diameter of 3.22meters at 1.37 meters, making 12 meters in circumference and 66.5-90meters tall.It is also believed that the tree was first discovered by a hunter in 1960 from Akim Asanteman. Several attempts to cut/uproot the true which was in 1966 resulted in casualties for victims and those who succeeded in cutting down the tree were mysteriously reinstated to its original position. The tree is now an ancestral home for the people of Akim Asanteman. This tree is believed to be about 360 to 4oo years old.It has a unique feature of a cylindrical shape with thick grey bark and its longitudinal ridged with splash bright pink leaves.
The sheer size and height of the tree leave so many local people in awe making them deify it. Its unique nature has led to the intervention of the Ghana Forestry Commission. The place is not only notable for its unique features but also serves as an object of worship to communicate with the maker. It served as medicine where infertile women can conceive when you use the bark and leaves of the tree as herbs. It is a mystery to them, and believing it must have some supernatural powers, they regularly visit the tree carrying gifts and sacrifices. Many have also duh holes around the giant roots of the tree where they leave their sacrifices with prayer requests for good fortune.
The tree doesn’t only serve as a tourist site, curative abilities as well. Again, a sick person who visits the site and performs the necessary rituals is healed spiritually.
